Planting of the Platinum Jubilee oak trees
in New Hutton and Old Hutton & Holmescales
Our two parish councils have planted oak trees to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. They are the third and fourth which the Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mrs Claire Hensman, has so far planted in the county.
In horrible weather on Sunday 20th February, Mrs Hensman planted an oak in a corner of the graveyard at Old Hutton, with the kind permission of the PCC and diocese. The tree has been grown from a local acorn by Anthony Fitzherbert.
The Old Hutton photographs show Mrs Hensman planting the tree (in the mud!), together with her husband Mr Peter Hensman, John Heap (chairman of the Parish Council), Ruth Rigg (parish councillor), Arthur Robinson (parish clerk), Anthony Fitzherbert, the Lord Lieutenant, some parishioners, and a small dog.
Mrs Hensman didn't turn a hair at being expected to access the graveyard by means of two small stepladders over a wall and fence. Patsy Aldersea is seen demonstrating.
The Lord Lieutenant then planted a tree at New Hutton (in rapidly worsening weather!) between the graveyard and the Old School.
The first New Hutton photograph shows (from left to right) the Lord Lieutenant, Martyn Welch (chairman of the Parish Council), Kath Twist (parish councillor), Mr Peter Hensman, and parish clerk Arthur Robinson (nearly out of shot), attempting to shelter from the driving rain while waiting for the appointed hour in case anyone else turned up. Nobody did, so we got on with it!
